This Louis Roederer Champagne Gift Boxed Bottle is one of the best champagnes and is widely recognised for its luxury gift boxed and unique foil wrapped bottle. A great gift or present for any occasions, champagne lover or not. Cristal, a blend of around 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot noir, is the prestige cuvee of Champagne Louis Roederer. Founded in 1776, and property of the same family since 1819, Louis Roederer is today one of the last (and one of the largest) major champagne houses still to be an independent family affair. Initially founded as Dubois Pere & Fils in 1776, Louis Roederer inherited the company from his uncle in 1833, renamed it and set out to target markets abroad. In 1909, Tsar Nicholas II nominated Louis Roederer as the official wine supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia. Roederer became established as a leading Grandes Marques producer and remains in the ownership of descendants Rouzaud - a family of leading Wine Spets. From a vineyard area of 240 hectares (590 acres), Louis Roederer produces two thirds of the grapes needed for its production, sourcing the remaining required fruit from established farming contacts. Cristal was made commercially available in 1945 but was first created in 1876 for Alexander II of Russia, and is viewed by many as the first "Prestige Cuvée." As the political situation in Russia at the time of his rule was unstable, the Tsar feared assassination. He ordered that champagne bottles for his Three Emperors Dinner be made clear, so that he could see the bubbles and also to prevent hiding a bomb within them, as could happen with a typical dark green bottle. Louis Roederer commissioned a Flemish glassmaker to create a clear lead glass bottle with a flat bottom. The Champagne has since become known as "Cristal" and is still presented in a flat-bottomed clear, "crystal" bottle, with its characteristc anti-UV cellophane wrapper and gold label.
